Cloud Forest, Monteverde, Costa Rica

Monteverde’s cloud forest is one of the most popular attractions in Costa Rica.  At 4,662 feet above sea level, Monteverde has a steady supply of clouds and rain which make the perfect living conditions for its abundant wildlife. The cloud forest is home to over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and several thousand insects and plant species. On a tour, you are almost certain to encounter sloths, tarantulas, kinkajous, raccoons, grey foxes, toucans, bats, snakes, frogs, and spiders. With over 70,000 visitors a year, the cloud forest has made itself one of the most visited places in Costa Rica-and for good reason. Established in 1972, the livelihood of the cloud forest was once threatened by local famers who wanted to expand their property into forest areas. The Tropical Science Center, an important non-profit conservation and research organization in Costa Rica, initially purchased 328 hectares of land and claimed responsibility to preserve and expand the beautiful area that we are all familiar with today, which now consists of over 10,500 hectares. While visiting the cloud forest, there are countless activities to pursue such as hiking, biking, zip-lining, canopying, and horseback riding. If you are interested in touring the cloud forest, you are in store for a very educational experience, as most tour guides are well-informed and dedicated to preserving this habitat and sharing knowledge with others, including you. There are countless tours to choose from including night tours, coffee tours, canopy tours, and eco-tours. Make sure to bring your camera, flashlight, dress in long clothing and wear rain boots during your trip to the cloud forest!
