There are four international airports in Costa Rica; Limon International Airport, Juan Santamaria International, Tobias Bolanos International Airport, and Daniel Oduber Quiros.

Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO), Alajuela

The oldest and largest airport in Costa Rica is Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO) located 16km from San Jose in Alajuela and services the Central Valley region north of San Jose. The airport was named after the nation’s hero, Juan Santamaria, who died fighting in the Battle of Rivas, against US-American filibuster William Walker. It was recently ranked as the third top airport and the most improved airport within Latin America.

There are over 20 airlines that operate out of this airport and nonstop flights to 44 cities. The major operator is Avianca, followed by Copa Airlines. If you’re traveling to Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, or the Caribbean coast, you should fly in to San Jose. The airport offers a variety of souvenir shops such as ‘Tico Corner’ and “Britt Shop Costa Rica’, cafes, duty free stores, and a fast food court.
-There is a $26 tax for departing flights.-

The VIP Lounge Costa Rica is a business located on the lower level of the main terminal. It is reserved for Priority Pass members, business travelers and first class passengers from certain airlines and companies. Telephones, fax, television, newspapers, and magazines are accessible in the VIP Lounge Costa Rica.

San Jose is a popular location to start just about any travel journey in Costa Rica. In fact, most travelers fly into SJO and use the extensive public bus system to travel to virtually any city in Costa Rica.

From North America, the airlines with direct flights to Costa Rica are as follows: Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Grupo Taca, JetBlue, Spirit Air, United, and US Airways. Most flights from the United States last between 3 and 7 hours.

If you are traveling from Europe, Lberia is the only airline with regular routes to San Jose. www.iberia.com

Daniel Oduber Airport (LIR), Liberia

Daniel Oduber Airport (LIR) in Liberia is convenient for travelers to the Guanacaste region and Nicoya Peninsula.

Despite its small size, this is the second most important international airport in Costa Rica. The airport is named after the first Costa Rican president Daniel Oduber Quiros. If you’re heading towards the beach, it is better to fly into Liberia to avoid the hassle of making connecting flights or driving from San Jose, which can last up to 5 hours in a car or, by bus. It features a variety of services such as a migration office, emergency medical department, refueling service, a fire brigade department, Internet, and cafeteria. The airport recently constructed an international terminal between April 2010 and October 2011. It opened in January 2012.

Liberia airport receives daily flights from places around Costa Rica and the entire world. There are 16 airlines that operate from Liberia airport. Outside of domestic flights, the most frequent connections are between the US and Canada.
